Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe Martinez sponsored legislation on Nov. 19, 2020 directing the county mayor to establish a county policy requiring the installation and maintenance of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and stop-the-bleed kits in all county facilities.
As a result of this legislation, the Internal Services Department conducted a countywide survey requesting details from all departments on the condition of defibrillators and kits located throughout county facilities. County departments were asked to identify additional locations within their facilities that would benefit from installing defibrillators and kits.
Based on the information received, the county has approximately 2,577 defibrillators and 304 kits in service at various locations. Twelve departments identified additional locations that would benefit from these additional devices, totaling approximately 487 additional defibrillators and 256 kits at various locations, including Animal Services, Aviation, Community Action and Human Services, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Cultural Affairs, Fire, Internal Services, Library, Parks, Police, Transit, and Water and Sewer facilities.
“I am extremely proud to have advocated for this legislation to make sure these types of lifesaving equipment are maintained and available at all county facilities,” Commissioner Martinez said. “We pray we never need automated external defibrillators and stop-the-bleed kits but feel better knowing they are available at county facilities and could save a life.”
