The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) a grant totaling $1,483,400 for the acquisition of 21 new heavy vehicle models.

This grant aims to fund the procurement of vehicles that are projected to reduce diesel emissions significantly, compared to older models currently in the DSWM fleet. The funding is provided under the EPA’s 2023 Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) program, which is designed to advance the agency’s goal of fostering a clean and healthy environment, as well as ensuring clean air for all.

“This EPA grant represents a significant advancement toward establishing a more resilient, cleaner and healthier environment for our community,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

“This investment in our fleet not only demonstrates our commitment to sustainability but also helps protect the well-being of our residents and the quality of our air. Together, we are making strides toward a healthier future for all,” the mayor added.

“We are extremely gratified by this award, which empowers us to further our mission to ‘provide our customers with exceptional waste collection and disposal services that protect, preserve, and improve our environment’ and making Miami-Dade a more sustainable and resilient community,” said DSWM director Aneisha Daniel, PhD.
