Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the Miami-Dade County Community Services Department On Wednesday, Oct. 22, hosted the From Silence to Strength: Domestic Violence Awareness Summit at The Healing Sanctuary in Homestead.
The summit brought together survivors, advocates, community leaders, and service providers for a powerful day of learning, healing, and action. Attendees also had the opportunity to connect with a range of supportive services and resources available year-round through the County’s Community Services Department and other local partner organizations.
The event featured Supa Cindy, beloved South Florida media personality and domestic violence survivor, in an emotional Breaking the Silence conversation where she shared her personal story and her ongoing mission to inspire hope and change.
“Domestic violence affects every corner of our community. It knows no boundaries, and it leaves lasting scars on individuals and families alike,” Mayor Levine Cava said. “In Miami-Dade, we refuse to look away. Through our Community Services Department, we are working every day to reach survivors with care, connect families to safety and healing, and break the silence that too often surrounds abuse. The From Silence to Strength Summit was a powerful reminder that when we come together with compassion, courage, and commitment, we can build a safer, more hopeful future for all.”
Cathy Burgos, director of the Community Services Department, echoed the mayor’s call to action, emphasizing the importance of collective engagement.
“Domestic violence is not just a personal issue, it is a public health crisis that requires our collective action,” Burgos said. “This summit created a safe space for survivors to be heard, for communities to learn, and for all of us to commit to breaking the cycle of abuse.”
The event featured a series of breakout sessions led by experts, covering topics such as recognizing signs of abuse, navigating the legal system, and building healthy relationships.
A resource fair also was held, where local nonprofits, law enforcement agencies, legal aid providers, and mental health organizations connected residents to vital services and support.
The From Silence to Strength Summit was free and open to the public, offering materials and resources in English, Spanish, and Creole to ensure accessibility for all Miami-Dade residents.
The Community Services Department remains committed to advancing prevention, education, and intervention efforts that promote safety and healing for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.
