With the 2025 Heat Season underway, Miami-Dade County and City of Miami have partnered to open new cooling sites to keep residents safe during hot days.

Cooling sites provide a safe, air-conditioned space where residents can seek relief from intense heat, get hydrated and cool down.

This year, Miami-Dade County has expanded its cooling site network to include 11 new sites – 10 are City of Miami Park facilities and one is located at Camillus Health. The new sites are included in the full list of cooling sites.

“We are grateful to the City of Miami and Camillus Health for their commitment to making sure our residents have a safe and comfortable environment throughout our hotter months,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “This now means we have a total of 64 cooling sites, many of them open seven days a week and with extended hours.”

The state of Florida has the highest rates of heat-related emergency department visits nationwide. While Miami-Dade County has seen a rise in emergency department visits with rising temperatures, it has managed to maintain the lowest rates in the state, in part due to its public outreach and education efforts.

“We have chronic high heat in Miami-Dade so we cannot wait until we have a heat advisory or heat warning to communicate the health risks of heat exposure and how to prevent them,” said Jane Gilbert, Chief Heat Officer for Miami-Dade County. “We want everyone to have the information and resources they need to be safe this Heat Season.”

In 2022, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava declared May 1-Oct. 31 as the county’s official Heat Season, sending the message that any day during this time the heat index or “feels like” temperature could reach temperatures that could trigger heat stress and heat-related illnesses.
