It was announced in December that Miami-Dade County is seeking new members for its Elder Affairs Advisory Board. One of the districts for which members are being sought is District 8, which includes Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay as well as parts of Kendall and Homestead.
Created in 2018, the job of the Elder Affairs Advisory Board is to expand support for seniors living in Miami-Dade County, while allowing them to play a more active role in local government by “crafting strategies to better meet their needs.”
The board will advise the mayor and county commissioners on issues related to the county’s programming, public services and facilities for elderly people, and such topics as transportation and mobility services, healthcare services, parks programming, silver services programming and affordable housing.
Monthly meetings of the Elder Affairs Advisory Board are open to the public. Residents are encouraged to attend and learn more about the work of the board.
Requirements to be a board member:
● Be a Miami-Dade County resident;
● Be age 50 years or older;
● Have knowledge and interest in the elderly population;
● Pass a background check and get fingerprinted, and
● Serve a minimum of four years and no more than eight years.
Anyone interested in becoming a board member should contact the office of District 8 County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins for more information. Her email address is District8@miamidade.gov, or you can call her office at 305-378-6677 at the South Dade Government Center in Cutler Bay or 305-375-5218 at the Stephen P. Clark Center in Downtown Miami.
