Determined to fulfill a dream, Alondra Roldan went from theme park fan to intern at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios this summer.
Born with a rare congenital disorder, Peters Anomaly, where she can only see light, colors and objects from a certain distance, Roldan has had a love of theme parks since she was young as it served as an escape from reality.
Interested in experiencing parks from another perspective, she applied to Disney’s internship program. When she didn’t hear back, it was Roldan’s persistence and dedication that gained her acceptance into the esteemed program.
Roldan is a Park Greeter at Hollywood Studios where she meets new people daily to welcome them in and out of the park, provide show information, directions and helps with crowd control. She has enjoyed the camaraderie she has built with the people she works with and although it has been scary, she says it has been incredible exploring the parks by herself.
As a Miami resident, Roldan was eager yet nervous to begin a new chapter that would come with a set of new visually demanding challenges. To navigate her new world solo, she recalls the skills she developed as a student at Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired where she was taught about job readiness, personal management like learning safe cooking techniques and how to budget her finances.
She also applied her mobility skills by using her cane to direct herself through unfamiliar places. With these skills, she’s found new friends, success and independence.
