Finding marijuana stash earns recognition for Kendall officer

A Kendall drug bust netted 105 pounds of marijuana and a citation for Miami- Dade Police Officer Federico Lopez who led to a major drug and cash seizure on Oct. 21, 2010.

Officer Lopez, praised for his initiative and alertness, earned the Officer of the Month award for Kendall District in February in recognition of his work that led to uncovering the illegal goods and the arrests.

A commendation letter signed by Kendall District Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) chair Barry White was presented by Michael Howe, CAC cochair, and Maj. James J. O’Donnell, Kendall District commander, during the Feb. 25 CAC meeting.

Investigating a residential burglary report at 8720 SW 125 Terr., Lopez entered the home and discovered a clear bag of marijuana on the floor of one room as well as duffel bag of the dried weed in a closet.

The homeowner’s wife who arrived shortly after the discovery was detained and the Narcotics Bureau contacted for questioning, the citation stated.

Bureau detectives subsequently obtained a search warrant, seizing 105 pounds of marijuana, 900 ecstasy pills, 4,000 controlled substance pills, 10 vials of steroids, two luxury vehicles and $10,241. The homeowners later were arrested and charged with trafficking, according to the citation.
