Five community council seats in Kendall up for August 26 vote

West Kendall Community Council 11 will have four contested races in the county’s Aug. 26 primary election, including two with trios of opposing newcomer candidates. By contrast, only a single contest appears on the ballot for one of four seats on East Kendall Council 12, with three of four seats due to be filled without opposition.

DAVIS FACES OPPOSITION IN COUNCIL 11 ‘AT-LARGE’

Veteran council chair Patricia “Shannen” Davis will face opposition from teacher Jose Soto for the Council 11 “At-Large” seat, a position created by former Miami-Dade Commissioner Joe Martinez to represent all areas in his district.

In Sub Area 113, incumbent Miguel A. Diaz is challenged by Mauricio Rodriguez.

Two Council Sub Areas with three-candidate races include:

Sub Area 112 — Alex Diaz, Steven Miro and Marco Valdes, vie for a current vacated seat.

Sub Area 114 — Andres Alvarez, Marcos Javier Novero and Humberto Ortega seek a seat vacated by appointee Jay Reichbaum who did not file for election.

Should none of candidates secure better than a 50 percent majority of votes, the two with the highest vote totals will compete in a runoff during the Nov. 4 general election.

In Sub Area 115, incumbent Beatriz Suarez is without opposition and automatically will retain her seat for a second fouryear term.

Vice chair Carolina Blanco whose Sub Area 116 seat is not up for election until 2016, and Socrates De Jesus, an appointee of Commissioner Juan Zapata, are the two continuing Council 11 members.

ALBERT SANTANA IN SOLE EAST KENDALL CONTEST

Vice chair Albert L. Santana who has served eight years is the only incumbent member challenged for a seat on East Kendall Community Council 12 in the Aug. 26 primary election.

Also filing for the Sub Area 123 post that covers an area south of Miller Road and west of S. Dixie Highway (US1) is Daniel Diaz, first-time office-seeker.

Another newcomer, Javier Gonzalves- Abreu, will replace Jorge L. Garciga in Sub Area 126 without opposition. Garciga, who formerly chaired the council, did not seek to run for a council sub area seat again.

In two other unopposed Council 12 seats up for four-year terms, former chair Peggy Brodeur (Sub Area 121) will be reelected automatically as will chair Elliott M. Zack (Sub Area 125), both without primary opposition.

Holdover Council members whose seats will have two-year terms remaining until 2016 are Matthew Larsh (Sub Area 122), Angela Vazquez (Sub Area 124), and Jose I. Valdes, an appointee of Commissioner Xavier Suarez.

Community Councils were created by county commissioners in 1996 to serve one of 10 geographic areas in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, each comprised of six members elected by the community. The seventh is appointed by the district commissioner for the community council area, and serves for an indefinite period of time until replaced.

  2. VERY disappointing. Absolutely no relevant, helpful data about the candidates. Unlikely to ever visit this site again.

  3. Where can we find information about the candidates? I can't find anything other than this article to help me understand who the runners are.
