The Alhambra Orchestra will present the winners of the orchestra’s annual concerto competition for middle and high school students on Sunday, Feb. 11, 7:30 p.m., in FIU’s Wertheim Auditorium, 10910 SW 17 St. The students will be performing the concertos they presented to a panel of judges in competition.
The winners will be accompanied by the orchestra under the baton of Daniel Andai, and the concert also will feature Rossini’s La Gazza Ladra Overture and the powerful overture to Die Meistersinger by Wagner.
The soloists are: third place finisher Marion Warfel performing George Hue’s Fantasie for Flute and Orchestra, second place finisher Sophia Zheng presenting the final movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D, and winner Madison Yan performing the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5. Yan, 13, and Zheng, 16, study at Dreyfoos School of the Arts. Warfel is a junior at Miami’s New World School of the Arts.
Bring the whole family, and stay for post-concert dessert reception to meet the musicians.
Alhambra Orchestra is Miami’s community orchestra, with a mission of supporting classical music and music education.
For this event, there is free admission and plenty of parking at reasonable rates. No tickets or reservations are needed.
