GEM Summer Arts Camp is for girls ages 6-16.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]his summer, girls ages 6-16 will have an opportunity to express their creative side, while developing valuable life skills that they can apply to their everyday life at the award-winning GEM (Girls Empowerment and Mentoring) Summer Arts Camp.

Back by popular demand, this exciting and innovative multi-arts program, presented by the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and

Open Spaces Department, challenges and inspires girls to develop and improve their communication, leadership and artistic skills, through a variety of fun arts classes and workshops: Visual and Performing Arts (Dance, Music, Painting, Arts & Crafts, Theatre, Oriental Arts, and Photography); Journalism, and Women’s History.

GEM Camp takes place June 8 – Aug. 7 at two locations, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday- Friday, and offers 7:30 a.m. early drop offs and 6 p.m. late pickup options. The cost is $100/week, plus a one-time annual registration fee of $12. Registration is underway at these sites and online.

“GEM goes beyond the traditional arts camp, inspiring girls to be the best they can be,” said Vivian Greer-Digon, GEM program manager.

“While our camps are great fun, expertly structured programming and mentoring provides the tools and connections that will empower them for success.”

During the nine-week program campers will receive guidance and access to resources from GEM partnering mentors. Professors and administrators from the University of Miami, Barry University, FIU and Miami- Dade College; organizations such Perez Art Museum-Miami (PAMM) and UN-Women- USNC/Miami Chapter, Viernes Culturales, and other qualified professionals from a variety of disciplines eagerly share their time and talents in guiding them toward a career path.

The Miami-Dade Parks GEM program began in the summer of 2010 as a pilot project initiated by the department’s Raices Hispanic Cultural Arts Center at Miller Drive Park. The program is sponsored by The Children’s Trust, a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.

Among its accolades, GEM is a 2013 NACo Achievement Award recipient and has been touted by FIU’s department of Women’s Studies 2013 Internship Dean’s List as a valued internship partner.
