Ten Miami-Dade Police Hammocks District officers were honored recently for combined actions to prevent further homicides in West Kendall.

On duty in the area just after 4 a.m. on June 12, Capt. Miguel Hernandez halted an escaping shooting suspect by holding him for a traffic stop before learning two victims had been killed in Arbor Courts at SW 143rd Avenue and 96th Street.

Officers quickly located the crime scene with the help of the suspect’s mother who had been driving in the area, searching for her son “before he hurt anyone.” Three fully loaded assault rifle magazines and still-smoking high-caliber assault rifle were discovered in the suspect’s car, even before detectives found two bodies and a front door riddled with bullets at an Arbor Courts residence.

The team’s quick action won Officer of the Month citations at a Citizens Advisory Committee meeting July 30.
