Holiday celebration scheduled at Continental Park on Dec. 19

One of Kendall’s oldest communities is readying for the Christmas holiday.

On Dec. 19, more than 300 Continental Park adults and children will begin their annual hometown “Holiday in the Park” celebration, complete with free hay wagon rides to tour the streets to view homes with holiday light displays.

“Those who have gone ‘all out’ to add cheer to our neighborhoods get certificates of appreciation from our Homeowner Association,” said Holly White, president of the Continental Park HOA, reelected to serve in office and as a member of the board of directors for her 15th year on Nov. 4.

Others elected to the board include Harlan Chiron, Sofia Fortenza, Steve Howard, Herman Koch, Rebecca Lowell, Oscar Melian, Pamela Perez, Cornelia Philipson, Donald Taylor and Gloria Zack.

The holiday celebration has grown steadily over the years to become an annual red letter day, centered around the Miami-Dade Continental Park pavilion at 10000 SW 82 Ave. and the historic Dice House, 10001 SW 82 Ave., just one block away.

From 6:30 to 9:39 p.m., hayrides will begin at the Park Pavilion and end at Dice House where children are treated to a free movie, hot chocolate and cookies and an 8 p.m. sing-a-long with the “Sweet Adelines,” a Gold Coast Chorus group.

“Plans for a visit from Santa are still in the works,” added White who just finished aiding in the park’s annual Halloween event with more than 400 attending a costume party on Oct. 24 with food trucks, bounce house and rock climbing.

A “Winter Break” camp begins Dec. 21 through New Year’s Eve to keep neighborhood children busy during their school vacation at the park’s baseball fields and basketball courts, playground, eight tennis courts, tot lot and picnic shelters. An after-school program with supervised activity is based at the pavilion during school days.

The name “Continental Park” identifying the neighborhood of 800 homes was adapted from the park itself, White noted, and is largely comprised of homes built during the 1950s. In some nearby sections, homes date to pre-World War II days.
