Mosaic Miami, formerly MCCJ, has been running the oldest interfaith clergy dialogue in the United States since 1935, so it was a natural fit for them to partner with Temple Beth Am’s unBIASed Initiative, which seeks to address antisemitism and all forms of hate in our community. Together they are having an Interfaith Potluck event entitled Breaking Bread. Breaking Bias on October 22 at 5 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami.
About 130 people will be treated to an unBIASed event filled with delicious food, unity, and diversity.Whether you are a seasoned chef, a novice in the kitchen, or simply just bringing your appetite, everyone is welcome to participate. “We are so proud of Temple Beth Am’s unBIASed initiative, now in its second year, working to combat antisemitism and all forms of hate. “Every day we work to create meaningful relationships with allies in our community,” said Edith G. Osman, Chair, of Temple Beth Am’s unBIASed Initiative. Through this potluck, both organizations hope to create an inclusive space where individuals from all walks of life can connect, learn, and build bridges of empathy. “By sharing a meal, we believe that we can break bread and break biases, fostering a more harmonious and compassionate society where individuals from all walks of life can connect, learn, and build bridges of empathy,” said Matt Anderson, Executive Director at Mosaic Miami.
People are encouraged to register via Eventbrite, which will then direct them to a survey about potential dietary restrictions; it is there that they can provide the dish they plan to bring.
On that Sunday night, Clergy Dialogue co-chair Reverend Tom Capo will kick off the event with welcoming remarks before turning it over to Mayor Daniella Levine Cava who is expected to attend. Rabbi Jeremy Barras, Reverend Walter, T. Richardson, and Reverend Capo will then offer a short prayer of gratitude/Grace/Hamotzi before inviting their guests to serve themselves from the potluck serving tables. Attendees will dine and participate in conversation starters, which will be provided via cards that will be placed in bowls at each table. At the end of the evening, invited participants will be asked to continue to develop and nurture these newfound relationships with one another. “We are firm believers that you ‘cannot hate someone whose story you know,’ so we hope that this unBIASed potluck dinner will provide a seed that can foster understanding among different people,” said Alex Fraser, Mosaic Miami Board Chair.
