Juliet Isabella Rodriguez, a senior attending St. Brendan’s High School has been working with A Safe Haven for Newborns for years. From participating in the 5K walks to assisting with auction items for the organization’s gala, Juliet has held this charity very close to her heart.

A Safe Haven For Newborn, a 501(3)(c), is dedicated to saving the precious lives of newborns from the ultimate in infant abuse — abandonment which can often end in death of the newborn. Nick Silverio, founder of A Safe Haven has dedicated his life in helping mothers-to-be and safely placing newborns in caring arms.  As of a recent count, 421 newborn babies have been saved from abandonment. In many instances the mother wants to keep the newborn, however is overwhelmed with the unplanned birth.

Knowing this, Juliet decided to assist Nick with pre-packed, personalized diaper bags filled with newborn items: diapers, lotion, baby shampoo, toys, blankets, crocheted newborn caps, onesies, wipes, cream, socks, bottles, pacifiers, etc.   In this way, when he receives the call, he is ready with a diaper bag full of necessities.

Juliet created and managed the project which spanned months in preparation. She found a sponsor to donate the diaper bags and personalized each bag with Safe Haven’s logo and worked with volunteers to donate the necessary items. The caps were crocheted by members of a senior day care center and volunteer students donated items in exchange for volunteer hours.

When all was accumulated, Juliet was able to fill dozens of diaper bags just in time for the holidays, when for some unexplained reason there are always more calls than usual. Silverio now will be more than ready when a young, new mother calls at the last minute requesting help.

JUuliet, homeschooled through eighth grade, has competed in high-level gymnastic since age 3. In her high school freshman year, she joined the St. Brendan High School family, changing her athletic endeavors to cheerleading. She is a member of the Spanish National Honor Society and the Law Academies Program as law school is in her future plans. She has devoted many hours serving her community with various charities and events including A Safe Haven for Newborns.

Juliet will be participating in the page program at the State of Florida House of Representatives in March working with the Speaker of the House in Tallahassee.   She has yet to commit to a college having already been accepted at many of the universities where she applied.

“I appreciate so much the many, many hours Juliet has contributed to A Safe Haven for Newborns and know she has a bright and exciting future awaiting,” Silverio said. “Along with her patience, compassion, intelligence and her can-do attitude she has been a pleasure to work with these many years.
