Killian High student gets early start on serving community
Joi E. Turner is pictured with her book titled The Tale of Lamar A. Love: We’ll Be Alright.

Joi E. Turner is a remarkable 15-year-old senior preparing to graduate from Miami Killian Senior High School with the Class of 2024.

Turner, who has been homeschooled through Florida Virtual School Flex since middle school, also has participated in the dual enrollment program at Miami Dade College.

Turner has been accepted to a number of well-known colleges including Valdosta State University, Clark Atlanta University, and more. She will enter and matriculate as a sophomore, majoring in computer science.

In her young life, Turner wears many hats. She is the CEO and Founder of Delivering Joi, an organization where she cooks hot meals and delivers them to the hungry and homeless. Her food is homemade and cooked with one special ingredient — love.

Additionally, Turner is the chair of the South Dade One Voice Youth Coalition (SDOVYC), sponsored by the South Dade One Voice Community Coalition. SDOVYC is dedicated to preventing youth substance abuse through educating teens and their parents about harmful substances found in the community. She is in charge of hosting events, recruiting teens, managing social media platforms, and so much more.

Turner also is the author of a fiction novel titled The Tale of Lamar A. Love: We’ll Be Alright, written and published when she was 14 years old. The fantasy-inspired novel highlights her writing abilities through her intricate main characters Lamar, Robyn, and Eminissa, who work together to overcome obstacles and challenges.

Turner’s involvement in Miami-Dade School Board member Luisa Santos’ Student Fellowship broadened her views of how our local government works. As a student fellow, Turner was able to work with other high school students to see how policies were made, how those policies are implemented, and how they affect students all over the county.

Turner earned 150 community service hours during her time as a fellow and she continues to add more by volunteering at community engagements with Santos.

As if she didn’t have enough to do, she is a member of Pearl Essence, a mentoring organization serving young ladies in grades 9-12 with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She furthers her experiences as a member of Top Teens of America sponsored by Top Ladies of Distinction Inc. Turner also is an active member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), African Heritage Club, and yearbook at Miami Killian.

Turner not only contributes to her community, she also is uplifted and involved in her community. She participates in Girls Empowered Through Mentoring and Service (GEMS) at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church where she has been on the Pastor’s Dean’s List for many years. Further, she has been serving in the Media Ministry, controlling the lights, directing the cameras, and broadcasting the live streaming for Youtube and Facebook.

Turner aspires to continue to be a pillar in her community and motivate her peers to reach any goal they set.
