Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has been awarded a $8.8 million Clean School Bus grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which will allow the district to add up to 25 electric buses to its current fleet. This will bring the district’s total to around 125 electric buses on the road by 2026.
In addition to replacing up to 25 diesel buses with electric ones, the grant will cover charging stations, and the training of lead mechanics. The training will occur through the Bluebird Technician Academy.
In exchange for the funding, M-DCPS will give the EPA up to 25 diesel buses. The number of diesel buses handed over will depend on the number of new electric buses funded. These new buses are expected to join the fleet in 2026.
Back in January the Clean School Bus grant also awarded M-DCPS $19.7 million for the purchase of 50 electric buses.
M-DCPS rolled out 35 electric buses this past school year and is expected to have 15 on the road by next year under the Florida Volkswagen Mitigation Settlement Trust. The addition of another 25 buses through the Clean School Bus Program means the district will have up to 125 electric buses on the road by 2026.
