Miami-Dade Schools superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, School Board member Lubby Navarro, elected officials, community partners, district administrators, school staff and students gathered Jan. 31 to unveil officially the new General Obligation Bond (GOB) construction project at Kendall Square K-8 Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Zyscovich Architects Inc. and Link Construction Group completed the $14.3 million Phase I, which included $10 million in GOB funds. The new school was based on a prototypical reuse, which resulted in time and cost efficiencies.
The project, the K-5 portion of what will eventually grow to a full K-8, includes a 58,765-square-foot, two-story school campus housing 750 student stations, with general classrooms, labs, media production lab, digital iTV, kitchen and dining areas, music lab and performance platform, administration area, parent and bus drop off, PE shelter, primary and Kindergarten play areas, and hardcourts.
“I am very proud to be a student at Kendall Square K-8 where I know I will be inspired to be a lifelong learner who will positively shape the future. Thank you for building this school for me and my friends to grow and learn in,” said Kirsten Widjaja, a second-grade student who spoke at the ceremony.
“I am excited to be a part of this historic event,” said parent and PTA president Shirley Quiroz-Guzman. “I am also excited for our children to have this opportunity to attend a new school with state-of-the-art technology that will play an integral role in their success in the future.”
The school bond projects resulted from voter approval of the $1.2 billion GOB. The bond is being used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the district, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.
