M-DCPS Magnet programs unlock the world of STEM
Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ STEM Magnet programs are the gateway to a world of endless possibilities.

In an era where technological advancements are revolutionizing how we live, work, and connect with the world, it’s no surprise that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education has become the cornerstone of the 21st Century.

Within Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), STEM Magnet programs are the gateway to a world of endless possibilities, allowing students to explore their passions, discover their career interests, and, in some instances, acquire industry certifications that serve as valuable assets post-graduation.

“Students in our STEM Magnet programs are not just attending classes; they’re embarking on educational journeys that transcend traditional boundaries,” said Jaqueline Basallo, executive director School Choice & Parental Options. “Imagine a K-12 career where students aren’t just learning about these subjects but living them daily.”

They might find themselves in an alternative reality, exploring virtual environments or learning to create applications using the same programming language that Apple developers use. Some design and develop video games, tapping into their creativity and technical skills to bring their imaginations to life.

Others choose to immerse themselves in the captivating world of nature and animals. For instance, students from BioTECH @ Richmond Heights 9-12 spend their school days at Zoo Miami working alongside zookeepers and scientists to care for the animals and gain firsthand experience in the world of life sciences and environmental conservation. Students at Biotech studying botany also take classes at Fairchild Tropical Gardens, learning how to populate species of plants in danger. They aren’t just learning from textbooks but living and breathing their subjects.

“When I found out that the school was linked with Zoo Miami, I thought that was amazing,” said Emily Sanchez, a student at Biotech specializing in zoology. “Now, I’m a junior and I got to pick a research project where we learn about specific animals first-hand and how to help their quality of life in in zoo settings.”

In robotics and engineering, students create award-winning robots and pioneer innovative prosthetics that improve lives. The knowledge and skills they acquire through these programs empower them to be change-makers and problem-solvers from a very early age.

And this is not just a brief introduction; these STEM programs begin as early as Kindergarten, as the example with our STArts and STArts2 initiatives, which incorporate exploration and innovation in marine, space, and earth sciences with an art focus. From a young age, students are exposed to the wonders of these fields, sparking their curiosity and passion for discovery.

One of the most significant benefits of these programs is the cost savings they offer families. Some students may receive college credit, industry certifications, and access to scholarship opportunities for post-secondary education, saving them and their families time and money. This promotes 21st Century skills that foster individual success and contribute to building a more skilled and innovative workforce for the future.

“These industry certifications not only validate skills but also empower students with a competitive edge in the workforce,” Basallo added. “By embracing this educational milestone early on, we not only prepare our youth for the demands of the professional world but also lay the foundation for a future generation of skilled, confident, and industry-ready leaders.”

This past November, M-DCPS celebrated STEM Day to recognize and celebrate the dedication of our students as they prepare for a world increasingly reliant on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These STEM programs are more than just education; they are your best choice for a brighter, more prosperous future for Miami-Dade County and beyond. They allow students to explore their passions, find their callings, and embark on journeys that will ultimately shape their lives and, ultimately, our world.

A good example of this is the Information Technology Magnet program at Southwest Miami High School, which includes an Artificial intelligence strand. Students learn the computer languages that allow them to use coding software to create chatbots, a skill they can take with them to college to further a career in information technology or programming.

“I want to design an AI chatbot that talks to people,” said Adiel Mendoza, a ninth grader at Southwest who is in the AI magnet. “I would like to create a super smart code that can solve real problems.”

M-DCPS is accepting applications for STEM Magnet and hundreds of other innovative Magnet programs for the 2024-25 school year. Applications are available at miamimagnets.org through Jan. 15, 2024.

We understand that choosing the right educational path is a significant decision, and to make the process more accessible, families have the flexibility to apply to up to five different schools with just one application. Take advantage of this opportunity to shape your child’s future and embark on a journey of innovation and discovery. Parents, if you are eager to explore these exceptional educational pathways for your child, the time is now.
