Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is expanding the use of vape sensors in all senior high schools in a continued effort to combat the rising danger of vaping among students. The initiative follows the success of last year’s pilot program that was implemented at nine high schools.
The sensors are designed to detect the use of e-cigarettes in restrooms, enabling staff to respond quickly and effectively. This expansion is an effort to enhance student health and safety on a broader scale, ensuring a safe, healthy environment conducive to academic success.
“Making sure our students are safe from the dangers of vaping in our schools is essential,” said schools superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres. “This is yet another example of how student health and safety are our top priorities.”
M-DCPS is continuing its comprehensive educational campaign to raise awareness among students, parents, and staff about the harmful effects of vaping. This includes emphasizing its impact on overall health beyond lung function, and the increased risk of addiction.
Parents will receive educational materials on how to recognize the signs of vaping in their children, as well as tips on how to discuss the dangers of vaping in an open and supportive way. An informative webinar is available on the M-DCPS Parent Academy’s virtual campus for additional guidance, Effects of Vaping: Tips for Parents and Caregivers.
The district is encouraging parents to have candid conversations with their children about the risks associated with e-cigarettes and to collaborate with the school community to create a healthy, vape-free environment. School staff also will receive ongoing training to identify vaping behaviors and effectively intervene when necessary.
The campaign will include a series of informational sessions for parents and community members, as well as resources available on the M-DCPS website.
“Educating students and parents is the best way we can ensure students make good choices beyond the classroom,” Dr. Dotres said. “Our goal is to partner with parents to make sure they have all the information they need to keep be aware of the dangers of vaping and keep their children safe.”
