M-DCPS School Board approves $24.9 million for GOB projects

The Miami-Dade School Board approved the commissioning of architects and contractors for five General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects collectively valued at approximately $24.9 million, during its regular monthly meeting on Jan. 17.

Voters overwhelmingly approved the GOB in 2012 to renovate, remodel and replace schools; expand student capacity; enhance safety, and provide technology upgrades.

Among those approved, two area projects awarded for design, pre-construction and construction were the following:
George Washington Carver Middle School — Scope of work includes: site drainage improvements; parking lot, service yard and driveway improvements; structural improvements in Building 12; selective replacement of concrete walkways; selective window replacement; interior partitions and flooring as needed; improvements to auditorium seats; restroom renovations and plumbing improvements; HVAC system improvements; fire alarm, security and P.A. system improvements; and selective painting.

Total project allocation, $3.98 million; Completion, August 2020; Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for architect’s team), 52 percent; Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team), 12 percent.

Arvida Middle School — Scope of work includes: new basketball standards; new entrance doors; HVAC system improvements; PA and security system improvements; selective flooring improvements; electrical and plumbing improvements, and selective painting.

Total project allocation, $3.59 million; Completion, August 2020; Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation, 35 percent; Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team), 10 percent.

The District-established S/MBE utilization goals were met or exceeded for the architects and contractors, with highly diverse sub-consultant teams. This was further strengthened by a strong commitment to local workforce utilization by the contractors.

Continued fidelity to the implementation of the GOB program and the District’s steady commitment to inclusiveness and diversity in its procurement process are positively impacting the quality of the educational environment and the local economy.
