Miami Dade College (MDC) student Liz De Armas, who is currently pursuing a degree in civil engineering at MDC’s InterAmerican Campus, has been accepted into the 2019 Station1 Frontiers Fellowship, a unique and prestigious ten-week residential summer science and technology education, research, and internship program based in Massachusetts. De Armas was selected from hundreds of applicants from around the United States and abroad and will be awarded a fellowship package worth approximately $15,000.

The Station1 Frontiers Fellowship program is a transformative educational and professional experience that comes with an internship placement in a leading science and technology company or research laboratory, a shared curriculum on science, technology, and society, mentoring by a team of dedicated Station1 instructors, participation in a four-day leadership institute, a formal personal and professional development curriculum, community and social events, and financial compensation.

“We are delighted and proud to have Liz participate in this exciting program that provides students pursuing engineering and technology degrees with an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience on a variety of projects that are changing the world around us and to network with professionals who serve as inspiring mentors at this early, but crucial stage in their careers,” said   Antonio Delgado, MDC’s Dean of Engineering, Technology and Design. “We hope Liz’s experience encourages many more students to seek these educational opportunities.”

De Armas’ summer internship research project will be provided by Altaeros, Inc. an MIT-spinout company whose mission is to deliver the next generation of infrastructure to rural and isolated communities. They have developed the Super Tower, the world’s first autonomous, tethered aerial platform that can be used for a range of applications in energy, telecom, and agriculture. This project will enable De Armas to work hand in hand with a multidisciplinary engineering and flight team to build, fly, and analyze performance data on the SuperTower.
