MDC’s Kendall Campus to celebrate its annual Arts and Letters program

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus, 11011 SW 104 St., will welcome back its ever-popular event, Arts and Letters, for its 25th consecutive year, Apr. 4-5. This year, the campus is celebrating the importance of immigration and migration.

All events are open free to the public.

Arts and Letters is the forum and arena for both the abstract and the concrete; where mind and matter meet passion and intellect. It uses strokes and words on canvas, screens, plastic, paper, chalk, and flesh and blood…any medium or none, all to find their home at the Kendall Campus.

Throughout the week, ideas and thoughts will spring forth from the creative mind of professional artists and performers, including faculty and students, manifesting themselves through art, music, literature and performance with events for everyone at any stage in their life.

Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the talent of fine musicians, published poets, and visual artists working together to produce new and unique works and to participate in hands-on activities.

The featured keynote speaker is Mexican artist Alejandro Cartagena, whose presentation on Apr. 5 will be followed by a meet and greet opportunity. Cartagena also will lead a two-day workshop for Kendall photography students focused on photo book history, edit, and sequencing methods. It is geared towards artists with work in progress who are looking for direction and guidance to create a photo book.

Wednesday, Apr. 5: 1-2:30 p.m., McCarthy Auditorium, Room 6120 — Building Narratives around the Dream of Homeownership, Local Migrations, and a Sense of Place. For the past 10 years, Alejandro Cartagena has produced works that present different ways of thinking about the interdependence of humans and landscape in the face of urban expansion and local migrations. During his lecture, he will address the various projects and books that delve into these issues.

2:30-3:30 p.m., Talking Place (Building 6) — Meet and Greet with Alejandro Cartagena. Come by and meet the keynote speaker immediately following the presentation.
