MDC’s The Reporter again named state’s top student newspaper

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) award-winning newspaper, The Reporter, has been named the top two-year college student newspaper in Florida for the 14th consecutive year at the Florida College System Publications Association (FCSPA) awards ceremony recently held in Ocala.

The Reporter placed in 14 of 19 individual categories, including 11 first-place awards, and earned 37 overall points. The competition was based on newspapers printed during the 2023-24 school year.

“I’m proud of our dedicated team and the quality content we produce,” said Isabella Arce, The Reporter’s current editor-in-chief. “These awards are a symbol of our work ethic and our commitment to the community.”

In addition to placing first overall in general excellence, The Reporter was awarded individual top honors for News Story, Feature Story, Sports Writing, Sports Column, Editorial Cartoon, Illustration, News Photo, Picture Story, Sports Photo, Website and Design. Nikole Valiente won an inner circle award for placing in the top three in three different categories.

The Reporter features 16 pages, prints on a monthly schedule, has a circulation of 10,250 per print cycle and is supplemented by a bi-weekly newsletter and a website with video and audio content. It is distributed at all eight MDC campuses and has newsrooms at the North, Wolfson and Kendall campuses. During the past 14 years, the paper has won 208 awards from the FCSPA, including 131 first-place honors.
