Mercedes-Benz pulled off something great with the 2024 CLE Cabriolet. The CLE 450 4MATIC occupies that sweet spot between compact agility and mid-size presence.
Think of it as the automotive equivalent of a perfectly tailored blazer – trim enough to look sporty, but substantial enough to command respect.
The design team has done an admirable job here, crafting a silhouette that looks purposeful with the top up and positively sporty with it down. That soft top performs its disappearing act in a brisk 20 seconds at speeds up to 37 mph – perfect for those moments when the weather changes its mind faster than a toddler in a candy store.
Under the hood, the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with mild hybrid assistance is a gem, producing 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The 48-volt mild hybrid system adds a welcome dose of efficiency and seamless stop-start operation. It delivers 23 miles per gallon in the city and 32 miles per gallon on the highway.
Inside, the cabin strikes an impressive balance between digital wizardry and analog comfort. The 12-inch digital gauge cluster and 11.9-inch central touchscreen dominate the dash, running the latest MBUX software. There’s a bit of a learning curve, but once mastered, it all makes sense. The front seats are comfortable, as is the back.
The real magic happens with the top down. Mercedes’ AIRCAP wind deflection system works to create what amounts to a bubble around the cabin. You can have a conversation at highway speeds without sounding like you are yelling across a crowded restaurant. It’s these little touches that justify the price tag at more than $70,000.
The CLE 450 handles with more agility than its size might suggest. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system provides year-round confidence. It’s not a sports car, but it will hustle through corners with enough poise to keep you entertained without spilling your coffee.
The pragmatists among us will appreciate that Mercedes has increased cargo space compared to its predecessors. The trunk offers 13.6 cubic feet with the top up, though that shrinks when the top goes down.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 Cabriolet is a well-executed luxury convertible. The CLE 450 4MATIC Cabriolet proves that convertibles can be luxury cars that compete with the top of the market. Give it a spin and tell me what you think.
