Nestled within the Miami Arts Studio 6-12 @Zelda Glazer, the José Milton Recording Studio stands as a beacon of opportunity for aspiring young musicians attending Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The state-of-the-art facility, generously gifted by the José Milton Foundation in 2018, is more than just a recording space—it’s a launchpad for creativity and artistic growth. Students across Miami-Dade can access the services of a high-end studio and create a professional product without having to pay a substantial cost associated with this type of product.
“We sat around a table with students, teachers and music professionals to see how we could best use the facilities to help kids get a leg up in the industry, get some real-life experience and encourage student songwriters,” said Ryan Ellis, the magnet teacher and coach at the Miami Arts Studio (MAS).
The studio is a hub of advanced technology. It’s equipped with cutting-edge instruments and recording technology, ensuring that students have access to the best tools available. From high-quality microphones and mixing consoles to a variety of musical instruments, the studio is designed to cater to a wide range of musical styles and recording needs. This advanced setup allows students to experiment with different sounds and techniques, honing their skills in a professional environment.
“We have the industry standard for recording, which is Pro Tools,” said Ellis. “Through the Latin GRAMMY Foundation and Gibson Gives, we were able to get about $15,000 worth of instruments just to give the students the best sound possible.”
The studio’s doors are open to all Miami-Dade County Public Schools students, making it a truly inclusive space. This accessibility ensures that a diverse range of young talent can benefit from the resources and opportunities provided by the studio. It’s a place where students from different backgrounds can come together, share their love for music, and collaborate on projects.
“Here at the José Milton Recording Studio, we’re able to use a lot of expensive equipment that a lot of people don’t have, especially at our age,” said MAS student Melissa Cruz. “It all helps your project and song reach its max potential.”
Cruz has been surrounded by music all her life. She is now the lead singer of the salsa band, Melodía y Rumba.
“Melodía y Rumba started around my freshman year,” explained Cruz. “They first started by songwriting together and then later they transformed into a band. We knew we had an outlet with the José Milton Recording Studio.”
Students who are interested in making a recording should visit the MAS website at mas.dadeschools.net and find the link Book The Studio. Due to the high demand for studio time, students must complete a brief audition process and include a video.
The José Milton Recording Studio is more than just a facility— it makes Miami-Dade County Public Schools your best choice for a nurturing ground for young talent, a place where dreams take flight, and a cornerstone of Miami’s artistic community. With its top-notch equipment, professional support, and inclusive approach, the studio is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of many young musicians.
