Miami Dade College (MDC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Maryam Laguna Borrego as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). Dr. Borrego will lead the operational and strategic functions of one of the nation’s most prominent higher education institutions, serving over 120,000 students across eight campuses and numerous outreach centers.
As COO, Dr. Borrego will oversee critical divisions, including Business Affairs, Facilities, Human Resources and Organizational Development, Information Technology, Government Affairs, Cultural Affairs, Marketing and Communications and The Idea Center, MDC’s renowned hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. She will guide these areas to ensure seamless alignment with the College’s strategic priorities, fostering operational excellence and sustainable growth.
“Maryam is an exceptional leader with vision, expertise and steadfast dedication to our students and community,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega. “Her deep institutional knowledge and proven ability to lead complex initiatives will be pivotal in continuing to advance our mission.”
Dr. Borrego has been a transformative leader at MDC, delivering impactful results through her strategic acumen and unwavering commitment to the College’s mission. In her expanded capacity, she will retain her role as Chief of Staff to President Pumariega while driving initiatives that enhance operational efficiency, financial resilience and institutional innovation.
Dr. Borrego’s promotion underscores MDC’s commitment to cultivating visionary leadership that drives transformative progress and growing high-performing professionals from within at every opportunity. During her tenure, she has spearheaded initiatives such as the Presidential Leadership Academy, facilitated landmark community partnerships and managed major infrastructure projects, all of which have contributed to MDC’s enduring success and community impact.
