Miami-Dade County’s Community Action and Human Services Department (CASHD), along with the Domestic Violence Oversight Board (DVOB), hosted a National Domestic Violence Awareness Month kickoff ceremony on Oct. 2 at the Stephen P. Clark Center.
More than 50 community partners participated in the event, which saw chief community services officer Cathy Burgos present a proclamation on behalf of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, County Commission chair Oliver G. Gilbert III and county commissioners, declaring October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Miami-Dade County.
Sonia Grice, CASHD director, introduced Burgos, who emphasized the importance of community action in addressing domestic violence. The event featured moving testimony from survivors Dr. Martha Wydra, Wilda-Cassandra Tany, and DVOB members Daniella Pierre and Rosa Kasse, highlighting the enduring impact of intimate partner violence.
Elizabeth Regalado, DVOB executive director, led the Pledge of Allegiance, joined by the children David, Thomas, and Daniel Padron. Wilda-Cassandra Tany inspired attendees with her rendition of the National Anthem and Lift Every Voice and Sing.
The event showcased creative projects from Safespace Central, Safespace North, Safespace South, In Transition South, the Empowerment Center, and the Coordinated Victim Assistance Center, including the “Empty Place at the Table” and the “Clothesline Project.” Dr. Francesco Duberli, founder of Survivors Pathway, generously donated a paella for the attendees.
Several Miami-Dade County buildings were illuminated in purple during the month to honor survivors of domestic violence, including the Stephen P. Clark Center, Miami-Dade Courthouse, Port of Miami, Miami International Airport, Frost Museum, and the Miami Tower.
