Miami-Dade County held a heartfelt dedication ceremony today for the newly named Sean W. McCrackine Pineland Preserve, honoring the legacy of an environmental champion whose nearly three-decade career exemplified unwavering dedication to the community and the environment.

The event was led by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and District 8 Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, alongside the Miami-Dade County Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, Division of Environmental Resources Management (RER-DERM). Family, friends, and community members gathered at the preserve to pay tribute to Sean McCrackine, who passed away last year.

His journey began as a Project Assistant at RER-DERM, where he quickly rose through the ranks due to his passion for environmental protection. He served in various leadership roles, including Communications Program Manager and ultimately became the Director of Policy for Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

“Today, we celebrate a remarkable life dedicated to the betterment of our community and the preservation of our environment,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava during the ceremony. “Sean’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations to protect and cherish our natural resources.”

Attendees included Sean McCrackine’s wife, Lou McCrackine, who expressed her gratitude for the community’s support and the honor bestowed upon her late husband. “Sean loved this community and worked tirelessly to ensure its natural beauty would be preserved for all to enjoy,” she remarked.

The Sean W. McCrackine Pineland Preserve is part of RER-DERM’s Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program, which manages over 85 preserves, encompassing more than 28,000 acres of vital natural habitats that support endangered species and provide essential green infrastructure for Miami-Dade County.

The dedication ceremony featured a sign unveiling and concluded with reflections on Sean McCrackine’s contributions to the county’s environmental efforts, ensuring his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who strive to protect the environment.

The Sean W. McCrackine Pineland Preserve is located at the corner of SW 192 Street & SW 140 Avenue, coordinates: 25°35’24.4″N 80°25’10.4″W, map:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/kdnvJnmgvfinw6CVA.
