Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) aspires to engage and prepare all students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) to increase student achievement, promote career and college readiness, and ensure that our community has the next generation of inventors, explorers, innovators, artists and leaders.
The future of this country depends on our capacity to increase the number of professionals in the STEAM fields. This only can be accomplished by students pursuing post-secondary studies and careers in STEAM areas. In our current era, new technologies are engineered and emerge every day, and people, who can use science, mathematics, and engineering to solve problems, will be in demand.
These days, every job — even those you least expect — requires some amount of skill in STEAM. However, many students graduate without those skills. That’s not just bad for our students; it’s bad for our communities that lack the well-trained workforce needed to attract today’s jobs. Maintaining our scientific and technological leadership is essential to our economy, national security and future. It’s not just about science and math; it’s about being ready for college, career and life.
We know that our students need to be prepared for jobs that are not yet on the radar. To do this, we need to teach students how to think, how to be critical thinkers, and adapt to an ever-changing world where they live. These 21st Century skills are effectively addressed through a quality STEAM education. Our students will be required to be innovative and creative problem solvers, designers, developers and inventors.
M-DCPS developed the STEAM School Designation program to ensure students are provided a well-rounded STEAM education. Currently, more than 175 schools have applied for this rigorous yearly designation. The list of STEAM schools that have earned a Gold, Silver or Bronze designation may be accessed by visiting steam.dadeschools.net/#!/fullWidth/339.
STEAM plays a critical role in students’ global competitiveness and future economic prosperity. To learn more about our STEAM efforts, follow us on twitter @MDCPSSTEAM.
