Department of Solid Waste Management now offers nine total sites throughout Miami-Dade

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), used motor oil is one of the most dangerous pollutants, slow to degrade, full of toxic chemicals and heavy metals, sticking to everything from sand to bird feathers. But there’s a silver lining: the Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is pleased to announce that residents can now recycle their used motor oil at the Sunset-Kendall Trash and Recycling Center (TRC).

“Proper disposal of motor oil is crucial for protecting our environment and waterways, so I am so pleased to continue to expand the options available to residents for the safe disposal of used motor oil,” says Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “By reducing pollutants and offering more recycling solutions, we’re not just safeguarding our community’s health but also fostering a culture of sustainability and responsibility. Together, we can ensure a cleaner and greener Miami-Dade for generations to come.”

Located at 8000 SW 107th Ave, Miami, FL 33173, and adjacent to the Kendall Indian Hammocks Park, the oil storage tanks at the Sunset-Kendall TRC are EPA, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management compliant. They are designed to withstand the elements and are user friendly.

“The Department of Solid Waste Management is dedicated to serving the residents of Miami-Dade County while protecting the environment,” says Department Director Aneisha Daniel, PhD. “We’re excited to announce the addition of the Sunset-Kendall site, which augments our ability to now accept used motor oils at nine convenient area TRCs.”

Miami-Dade’s TRCs allow for the disposal of larger types of household trash and debris. Residents can drop off household trash, tree and yard cuttings, and as many as three cubic yards of construction and demolition debris per day, at any of the 13 sites. Garbage (food or kitchen waste) is not accepted at TRCs. Click here to find the closest location.

As part of the commitment to creating a Zero Waste community, DSWM has expanded its used oil collection efforts at TRC locations in North Dade, South Miami, and Palm Springs North over the last two years. DSWM is excited to announce plans to add West Little River, Eureka Drive, and the West Perrine TRCs as additional sites for used oil-collection. Residents can also drop off used motor oil at the two conveniently located Home Chemical Collection centers and at DSWM’s Home Chemical Collection mobile events.

The DSWM collected more than 42,000 gallons of used motor oil at eight current locations in 2023, and 25,000 gallons have been collected during the first 6 months of 2024.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony open to the media is planned for Tuesday, November 26, 2024, beginning at 12:30 p.m. To learn more about the department, please visit miamidade.gov/solidwaste.
