The Miami-Dade School Board recently approved a budget of more than $7 billion for the 2023-24 fiscal year, focusing its expenses on prioritizing the mental health and emotional well-being of students, providing crucial services to students with disabilities, and ensuring school safety and the protection of pupils and teachers.

The 2023-24 budget has been bolstered greatly by the infusion of more than $1 billion in federal stimulus funds, a response to the impact of the pandemic. Despite a change in the millage rate from 6.589 to 6.699, it is currently among the lowest it has been in more than 40 years.

“This budget reflects the school board’s hard work and commitment to the safety and security of our students and staff, the integrity of teaching and learning, student achievement, prioritizing mental health, and respecting our taxpayers,” said school board chair Mari Tere Rojas. “Thank you to my esteemed colleagues on the board and superintendent of schools for their steadfast tenacity and dedication to our school district.”

Additionally, the overwhelming passage of a referendum last November, a resounding endorsement from the community, means the school district can continue to make substantial investments in both instructional salaries, but most importantly, the safety and security of students.

“I am proud of the priorities reflected in this budget, which is designed to protect the health and wellness of students and staff, the financial stability of our school district,” said Dr. Jose L. Dotres, Miami-Dade County Public Schools superintendent.
