The Miami-Dade School Board approved the commissioning of architects and contractors for three General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects and the award of construction contracts for five other GOB projects collectively valued at approximately $48.2 million, during the board’s recent regular monthly meeting.
Voters overwhelmingly approved the GOB in 2012 to renovate, remodel and replace schools; expand student capacity; enhance safety, and provide technology upgrades. Two area schools were among those approved:
Dr. Gilbert L. Porter Elementary School — Scope of work includes: portable demolition and site restoration; replacement of playground equipment and impact surfaces at Primary Learning Center; re-coating and re-surfacing of play courts; parking lot improvements; selective replacement of concrete walkways; replacement of generator, backflow preventer and PA system; HVAC system improvements; security alarm system; renovation of restrooms; miscellaneous electrical upgrades; and selective interior and exterior paint.
Total project allocation — $ 4 million;
Completion — September 2020;
Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for architect’s team) — 50.54 percent, and
Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team) — 23 percent.
Palmetto Middle School (Phase I) — Scope of work includes: new covered walkways; full renovation of auditorium; remodeling of shower area to storage and new lockers; roof repairs; selective replacement of windows and exterior steel doors; removal of old exterior lockers along exterior corridors; repair/replacement of metal lockers at male and female locker rooms; replacement of boiler with new hot water heater and complete HVAC system installation; restroom renovations; selective interior/exterior paint.
Total project allocation — $ 4 million;
Completion — September 2020;
Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for architect’s team) — 42.58 p, and
Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team) — 11 percent.
Miami Arts Studio 6-12 at Zelda Glazer — Scope of work includes: new 700-seat auditorium to include a full working stage; orchestra pit; dressing rooms; storage and green room; lobby; ticket booth and concessions; CCTV suite (with production studio, control room, workshop, production classroom, distribution and editing rooms); vocal music classrooms (one middle and one senior high level) with practice rooms; ensemble and dance rooms, and related support spaces for each area; related onsite and offsite improvements including new parking lot; demolition of three hardcourts and installation of one hard court; and miscellaneous upgrades throughout.
Total project allocation — $ 11.5 million;
Completion — March 2019;
Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team) — 22.08 percent,
Ethel Koger Beckham Elementary School — Scope of work includes: construction of a new 378-student station, one-story classroom building comprising 13 classrooms, one general science classroom, one science lab with associated storage spaces, one computer lab, one foreign language lab, an administration area, one multipurpose room with two student changing rooms, two student toilet rooms, two staff toilet rooms, attached dining shelter, and ancillary spaces; covered walkway connections; new hard court; additional parking; landscaping, drainage and irrigation systems.
Total project allocation — $ 6.22 million;
Completion — March 2019, and
Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team) —29.64 percent.
The District-established S/MBE utilization goals were met or exceeded for the architects and contractors, with highly diverse sub-consultant teams. This was further strengthened by a strong commitment to local workforce utilization by the contractors.
