Mari Tere Rojas, Miami-Dade County School Board chair and District 6 representative, during the meeting of Oct. 8, proffered agenda item H-4, endorsing National Family Literacy Day, Nov. 1, in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).
National Family Literacy Day, first declared by the U.S. Congress in 1994, is dedicated to fostering literacy within families. Research shows that when families read together, they not only improve critical reading skills but also create positive, unforgettable memories. The observance reinforces the core belief that literacy begins at home and grows through shared experiences.
In 2025, the celebration embraces both traditional and modern activities. M-DCPS encourages families to read books, tell stories, or engage with interactive reading apps and online resources. This inclusive approach ensures that all families, regardless of their reading ability or the language spoken at home, can participate and build a lifelong love of learning.
In celebration of National Family Literacy Day, the School Board encourages all M-DCPS families and community members to engage in reading and literary activities together, highlighting the vital role caregivers play in a child’s educational journey.
