Since 2011, Kendall Toyota has donated a brand new car to the Teacher of the Year for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. This year during the 2024 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year event, fifth-grade teacher Don Clerveaux was selected as the winner and took home the grand prize.
Clerveaux began his teaching journey in 2013, teaching science at Orchard Villa Elementary School in Liberty City. His love for science continues on through today, he teaches fifth-grade science and social studies at Phyllis Ruth Miller Elementary School near Miami Shores. Additionally, he coaches football, track and field, and strength and conditioning at Hialeah Gardens High School, bringing his passion for fitness to his team.
Growing up, Clerveaux had his own struggles in school. “I was a student in class that sometimes didn’t want to go to school. And as I was riding my bike to school, I would always have that one spark, that one teacher, or that one class that motivated me, that made me feel like it was going to be okay. There’s going to be someone in your corner and there’s going to be someone, I hope soon, so don’t give up,” he said. Knowing this, Clerveaux takes a supportive approach to his teaching, whether in the classroom or on the field, and aims to be that teacher who motivates his students and helps them if they’re struggling. “I want them to understand that whatever they’re going through, it’ll be alright.”
In addition to winning the top prize of $5,500, Clerveaux got to take home a brand new 2023 Toyota Corolla. Kendall Toyota Fleet Manager Michael Cordero, along with Dealer Principal Lori Bean, handed the keys to Clerveaux at the event. He received a new 2023 Toyota Corolla LE trim in Blueprint. This Corolla has all the latest technology and features including Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of active safety features designed to help protect you and your passengers from harm.
