The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) recently broke ground on vital upgrades to wastewater Pump Station 848, located at McMillan Park.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has continued to advocate for the acceleration of critical WASD upgrades as part of the department’s multi-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
“I am committed to the enhancement, strengthening, and futureproofing of our county’s infrastructure,” Mayor Levine Cava said. “By modernizing this facility, WASD is ensuring that communities can continue to thrive, new housing and businesses can be accommodated, and residents benefit from reliable, high-quality wastewater services, reflecting the nearly $2.8 billion in CIP investments we have prioritized during my administration to build a stronger future for Miami-Dade.”
Miami-Dade County Commission chair Anthony Rodriguez expressed strong support for WASD’s ongoing CIP achievements.
“As the chairman for Miami-Dade County’s Board of County Commissioners, I applaud the essential work the Water and Sewer Department is doing to support the county’s commitment to building strong, reliable infrastructure that protects neighborhoods today while laying the foundation for sustainable growth in the years ahead,” Rodriguez said.
“As District 10’s commissioner, I am happy to see the critical investments and upgrades being made in this community that will improve service reliability for existing customers today and address capacity issues based on predicted residential and commercial growth for the future.”
Miami-Dade County Chief Utilities and Regulatory Services Officer Roy Coley attributes WASD’s continued historic CIP execution to Mayor Cava’s continued collaboration.
“Mayor Levine Cava’s unwavering support is an invaluable asset that enables WASD to deliver on its commitment to upgrades and process improvements — enhancing reliability, redundancy, and system hardening through resilient, climate-ready designs,” Coley said. “These efforts reflect the department’s vision of becoming a model utility of excellence in reliability, resilience, and environmental stewardship.”
The upgrade of Pump Station 848 is a key project under the Pump Station Resilience Program (PSRP), which focuses on upgrading critical wastewater facilities to ensure long-term reliability, efficiency, and resilience. Project improvements include flood-proofing the pump station, modernizing its electrical and mechanical systems, and restoring the surrounding area upon completion.
“These upgrades will increase system capacity to better serve Miami-Dade County’s growing population and provide the infrastructure necessary to support future residential and commercial development,” said WASD director Jay J. Fink, PE. “Our dedicated water and sewer professionals continue to look ahead with the goal of exceeding past successes as we plan to deliver high-quality services to our customers for generations to come.”
The Department has partnered with Milian, Swain and Associates (MSA), a firm with an extensive record of providing professional civil and environmental engineering services for government, private, and municipal clients, including WASD. MSA designed the critical upgrades that will be constructed by D’Universal Builders Inc.
