Enzo Menditto from Miami (a sophomore at Georgetown University) bowman on Team Petersen, along with skipper Jeffrey Petersen (junior at Georgetown) and Max Brennan, main and spinnaker trimmer, secured a first-place victory at the 56th Annual Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship Regatta in Newport Beach, California this summer. Behind a near-perfect performance, USA ‘s Petersen/Menditto/and Brennan swept Australia’s Cole Tapper in the best-of-five finals. Teams from a record eight countries sailed in the prestigious event with three teams representing the USA. In what had been a mostly drama-free regatta, Petersen’s team faced its first moment of pressure in the semifinals, when USA’s Justin Callahan (a sophomore at Harvard) evened up the best-of-five semifinal at 1-1 in the last race of Friday’s action, leaving the host club entry to sleep on its first defeat of the event. Ultimately, Callahan (also from Miami) and his team, including twin brother Mitchell (a sophomore at Harvard), Liam O’Keefe (Brown University) and Danny Riano, finished in 4th. Next up, USA’s Team Petersen, including Menditto and Callahan, will be competing at Youth Matching Racing Worlds in Sydney, Australia December 9-15.
