Theater gives the opportunity for people to come together to experience something exhilarating. And after being on a four-year hiatus, Miami Sunset High School’s Drama program is back up and running again.

As soon as Sunset’s students heard that the drama program was back, many of them were quick to sign up.

“I’m looking forward to the drama program this year,” Gabriela Mederos said. “I’ve always loved acting ever since I was little, and to hear that our school would be doing drama again, I couldn’t pass up that opportunity,”

Clarence Jones is Sunset’s new drama and TV production teacher. Theatre has been in Jones’ life for a very long time.

“I knew that I wanted to be involved with theater since my sophomore year of high school,” he said. “To me it’s about the opportunities for people to get creative and express themselves and I loved the idea of that. I also acted and directed for many productions while I was in college. It was a great experience.”

Jones has many things in store for the drama program.

“I have been working a lot in our auditorium in order to prep it for future productions,” he said. “I also plan to branch out our drama classes into Acting One, Acting Two, and Three. I’m a creating a DNB (Drama and Broadcasting) Club so my drama and TV production classes can work together with projects. I also plan on doing competition down the road.”

He also is also planning on producing shows for the school.

“I want to at least do two productions each year — a smaller show during winter and a longer one for the spring time. We are actually doing a production next year in March,” he said.

Jones and his students are working on an original production, a screenplay written by them, about the school.

“It’s going to revolve around the struggles and events that teenagers go through in high school. Relationships, drama, classes, you name it.

We are all very excited for the production,” he said.

As of for now, auditions will only be open to drama students.

“I really want to make the drama program more popular. Hopefully students who want to audition will come to the program to participate in productions, hence, getting more people to join us. As time progresses, I do intend on opening auditions up to the rest of the school.”
