“Miami Sunset Senior High School Journalism: Writing the Future”

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Miami Sunset Senior High School is a traditional high school where ninth-twelfth grade students can walk through the building doors and participate in clubs, play on sports teams, and run for Student Government. However, the Miami Sunset award winning academic programs are unique, distinctive, and utterly exceptional. With a focus on preparation for college and careers, students are engaging in meaningful educational experiences through hands-on learning. The school features four distinct magnet programs: Medical, Engineering, Cybersecurity and Digital Media as well as other programs like NAF Academies. One of the most popular programs is the Journalism Program which is led by Dr. Gabriela De Francisco.

The Miami Sunset Senior High School Journalism Program is open to all students on campus. The program teaches students skills such as writing and editing, digital design, photography and more. Students in the Journalism program can take industry examinations so that they may earn certifications that they can use both in the program as well as out in the business world. The Journalism Program also teaches the students the skills that they will be able to use in the real world like being able to communicate with others, brainstorming ideas, using technology for creative purposes, and interviewing and writing skills.

The yearbook staff is currently working on Equities Literary Magazine and are transitioning the school newspaper, The Crusader, to an online platform. The program has a newspaper staff and a separate yearbook staff which maximizes student involvement and increased opportunities for new or emerging members. The magazine collaborates with the award-winning Sunset art department led by Ms. Judy Elkins.

Community is also a large part of the Knights’ Journalism Program. Journalism students have annually participated in various service activities like adopting families during the holidays and collecting goods to be donated to the less fortunate. Also, the Quill & Scroll International Honor Society for High School Journalism chapter at Miami Sunset has the significant role of putting out a literary magazine every year as a community service project. Next year, the newspaper is expanding to incorporate a bilingual section in Spanish to be called El Sol. This would highlight the Hispanic community at Miami Sunset Senior High School and permit the ELL students to express themselves in what many consider their first language.

Over the past few years, the Journalism program under the direction of Dr. Gabriela De Francisco has taken off and become a tremendous success. With awards like Most Outstanding High School Yearbook in 2020, Southern Interscholastic Press Association a Superior Rating for 2020 and 2021 and the Colombia Scholastic Press Association Gold Medal in 2020 and 2021, this program is going strong and will continue to do so! Annually, the Journalism Program accepts new students through an interest form distributed to all students. The program is currently accepting students for the 2022-2023 school year.
