Some of Miami’s top math students from 15 Miami-Dade County Public Schools and K-8 Centers participated in the third annual Middle School Math Invitational Competition on Saturday, Jan. 28.
The competition was hosted by the School for Advanced Studies (SAS) and Miami-Dade College North Campus. The pool of competitors included 113 students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades from schools across Miami-Dade County.
“We are very excited about this year’s math competition because we doubled the number of students who participated and achieved greater diversity…every Miami-Dade County zip code was represented,” said Dr. Omar Monteagudo, principal of SAS, a nationally recognized collegiate high school.
SAS provides high-performing 11th and 12th grade students with the opportunity to complete high school while concurrently taking a full course load at one of six Miami-Dade College campuses.
According to Dr. Monteagudo, the annual competition provides an opportunity for middle school students to demonstrate their proficiency in math and algebra as individuals and in group settings.
Each individual contestant was required to complete 30 math problems within 30 minutes.
Within the Team Test category, 20 problems in algebra and geometry had to be solved in just 20 minutes. The level of difficulty ranged from easy problems to those which very few students would get correct, much less understand right away.
Taking first place in the Team Competition were students of Team 2 from Howard D. McMillan Middle School. Second place honors went to Team 1 from Ruth Broad Bay Harbor K-8, and third place laurels went to Team 2 of Ruben Dario Middle School.
First place in the individual category include Jayden Dama, sixth grade student at Eugenia Thomas K-8; Ellis Lee, seventh grade student at Howard D. McMillan Middle School, and Yochua Penagus Rodriguez, eighth grade student at Ruben Dario Middle School.
Finishing in second place were Jayden Nyangenyo, six grade student at Frank C. Martin K-8 Center; Matthew Kopelman, seventh grade student at Howard D. McMillan Middle School, and Rowan Albertini, eighth grade student at Ruth Broad Bay Harbor K-8.
Third place finishers include Gabriel Izquierdo, sixth grade student at Howard D. McMillan Middle School; Daniel Hagan, seventh grade student at Lawton Chiles Middle School, and Sophia Pelayo, eighth grade student at Ruth Broad Bay Harbor K-8.
“This competition gives students an opportunity to troubleshoot, think critically and collaborate,” Dr. Monteagudo explained. “These students already have a love for numbers. Our goal is to advance awareness among students and parents of the potential trajectory of a student of math, to encourage them to pursue STEM-related fields.”
