As a result of legislation sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez this past fall, the Miami-Dade Police Department has developed an operational plan to improve security at all Metrorail and Metromover stations.

The Miami-Dade County Transit System includes 23 Metrorail stops and 21 Metromover stops, and the MDPD is assigning one uniformed police officer to each Metrorail and Metromover platform in an effort to increase police presence and deter crime from occurring on the platforms, as well as on the trains and shuttles, bringing the total number of uniformed officers needed to 40 per shift.

The uniformed component will be overseen by one lieutenant per shift, who will act as incident commander and oversee operations, eight sergeants per shift, the first line supervisors, who will provide guidance and supervision to the officers working the detail.

The overall hours of operation will be from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with shifts consisting of 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The total number of personnel per day will consist of 80 officers, 16 sergeants, and two lieutenants.

The new security plan complies with Commissioner Martinez’s legislation, which was approved on Oct. 26, 2020 and specifically called for sworn police officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) at stations and providing MDPD and the Homeland Security Bureau’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) with access to the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) closed circuit television system.

“It is our job to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors using the Metrorail and Metromover systems. MDPD continues their firm commitment to providing a safe and pleasant riding experience for everyone,” Commissioner Martinez said. “It is a top priority to prevent decent citizens from becoming victims of crimes while using public transit as their means of transportation.”
