More than 5,000 people attend annual Asian Culture Festival

The Miami-Dade County Asian-American Advisory Board and the Miami-Dade Parks & Recreation Department joined the Thai-American Association of South Florida to offer two daytrips to the continent of Asia via the 32nd annual Asian Culture Festival. The festival took place on Mar. 4-5 in Tropical Park attracting more than 5,000 guests.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Commission Chair Oliver G. Gilbert III, Vice Chair Anthony Rodriguez (district commissioner), and Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez presented a proclamation and spoke about the significance of the celebration of Asia. On Sunday, many festival goers took pictures with the Miami Heat 2013 Championship Trophy which was on display for the event.

The two-day, fun-filled family event offered music and dance performances, demonstrations, arts and crafts, and a selection of authentic and delicious Asian cuisine with a variety of dishes from Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Iran, South Korea, Turkey, India, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Israel, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Vietnam, Mongolia and more. Back again this year was the thrilling Japanese Taiko drummers Fushu Daiko, Puff and SOS Dragon Boat Race Teams, martial arts demonstration representing China, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand, and the ever-popular Lion Dance. Attendees were amazed by their thundering rhythms, dynamic movements, and intense showmanship.

During the festival, the public learned about the traditions, contributions, and heritage of Asia. Children had educational adventures across Asia by visiting each country’s booth. The festival organizers seek to continue bringing together the South Floridian community at large, for years to come, promoting the importance of cultural diversity and inclusivity in building a vibrant, prosperous, and healthy community.
