The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Training Division recently conducted a mock shift known as “My Very First Shift” to prepare the recruits of Class 158 for the wide range of emergencies they will face once they graduate later this month and begin serving as probationary firefighters in Miami-Dade County.
Developed under the leadership of Lt. Reginald McKnight, this hands-on training places recruits in realistic, shift-based scenarios that mirror the pace and challenges of an actual day in the field. Over several days, crews responded to simulated fire, EMS, and technical rescue calls, applying the full range of skills learned throughout their time in the fire academy.
The Mock Shift incorporates participation and input from all MDFR Training Bureaus, including Recruit Training, Probationary Development, EMS, Dispatcher, In-Service, Dive, and Driver Training. It also benefits from the invaluable support of volunteer Operations personnel, including Officers and Driver Operators, who provide hands-on guidance and mentorship. This collaboration ensures recruits gain experience across the full spectrum of specialized fields within the department.
As MDFR continues to train and prepare the newest generation of firefighters, “My Very First Shift” remains a vital part of ensuring recruits are ready to serve our community with professionalism, teamwork, and dedication.
