There is a suicide every 11 minutes and is a leading cause of death among our youth
With the suicide death rate in the US increasing by 2.6% between 2021-2022, * NAMI Miami-Dade is presenting the second South Florida Suicide Awareness Conference: “Honest Talk About Suicide and A Message of Hope” on Saturday, April 20, 9 am – 12:00 and check-in begins at 8:00 am at the University of Miami Newman Alumni Center. The event is free to the community. Registration is required.
Suicide is responsible for more than 48,000 deaths in 2021, which is about one death every 11 minutes, according to the CDC. It was the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-14 and 25-34 in 2021. In 2021, an estimated 12.3 million American adults seriously though about suicide, 3.5 million planned a suicide attempt and 1.7 million attempted suicide, according to the CDC.
“We want to educate everyone about mental health, no matter their age or demographic. Based on last year’s conference, we have seen how the community benefits from this type of education to recognize the signs of suicide, what to do and where to go for help,” said Susan Holtzman, CEO of NAMI Miami-Dade (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
“NAMI Miami-Dade is a crucial resource for our community offering several programs and initiatives that help those with mental health challenges and their families. Remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, and you don’t have to face mental health challenges alone,” she said.
NAMI will feature leading national and local experts who share trends, statistics, what triggers suicidal thoughts, discuss those communities most impacted and the many resources available in the community.
All NAMI Miami-Dade programs are free – ongoing support groups, educational programs, Suicide Prevention Training called QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) and Ending the Silence Presentations for youth, families and companies to provide support, awareness and education about suicide and mental health issues.
