‘National Night Out’ activities return to village’s Coral Reef Park on Aug. 2Palmetto Bay’s Coral Reef Park will be the site of the yearly “National Night Out,” taking place on Tuesday, Aug. 2. As in the past, the Village Policing Unit is working together with the Parks Department for the event.

On the first Tuesday in August millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide.

An annual community-building campaign, it promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.

Parks & Recreation director Fanny Carmona explained the importance of the event.

“National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community,” Carmona said. “Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.”

The event will take place between 6 and 10 p.m. From 6 to 8 p.m. will be the Resource Fair, featuring village programs such as Crime Watch, Rad Kids and others. There will be PTSA booths for local schools and free bicycle helmets provided by the Florida Department of Transportation will be distributed.

There will be bounce houses, face painting, tennis activities and a balloon artist. For adults there will be axe throwing and a mechanical bull. There will be free frozen lemonade (while supplies last). Food vendors will be selling a variety of food items from 6 to 10 p.m., and at 8:15 p.m. the Disney movie Encanto will be shown on the big screen. Village staff reminds everyone to bring blankets and chairs.

Officer Kevin Collins of the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Village of Palmetto Bay Community Outreach Unit is pleased that the village is participating in the event and is looking forward to it.

“National Night Out is an evening where our local police department can come together with the community and share ideas as well as have a wonderful evening celebrating the place where we all work and live,” Officer Collins said.

Coral Reef Park is located at 7895 SW 152 St. For updates visit the village website at www.palmettobay-fl.gov/ or call 305-259-1234.
