Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Magnet Schools is a gateway to a world of educational opportunities, offering specialized thematic programs that can set your child on a path to success from elementary through high school. Students at these schools experience a specialized curriculum that enriches their learning and allows them to delve deeply into their areas of interest.
We’ve seen firsthand that by fostering and building upon their interests, talents and abilities, students consistently achieve greater success. With pathways leading to industry-level certifications, college credits and even full-paid scholarships, M-DCPS Magnet schools are your best choice for excellence and innovation in your child’s PK-12 experience.
Not sure where to begin? Here are some tips to get started with Magnet Schools.
Application Period and Deadlines: The clock is ticking! The application window for the 2024-25 school year will close Jan. 15, 2024. This means that if you apply during this period, your student will be considered for the program that begins in August of the next school year. Make sure to mark your calendar to ensure you seize the opportunity to join these exceptional programs.
Exploring the Possibilities: M-DCPS boasts an impressive array of Magnet programs grouped under five thematic areas. These include International Programs, STEM, Visual and Performing Arts, Liberal Arts, and Virtual Learning. The key to finding the right fit for your child is to start by identifying their interests.
Research shows that students excel when they’re passionate about their studies, and M-DCPS Magnet programs are designed with this principle in mind. They weave these thematic elements throughout the curriculum, allowing students to explore their passions and interests. You can check out all of our program options on our website, miamimagnets.org.
Research Phase: Directly engage with Magnet Schools. Schedule school tours to experience the environment and community personally. Connect with other families to gain insights and uncover any enhanced criteria requirements.
Some programs may require prerequisites like Algebra 1 or Physical Science Honors. If these courses aren’t currently part of your child’s coursework, don’t worry. Virtual options are available to help your child meet these requirements before the program year begins. Reach out to the guidance counselor at your child’s school for direction on these options.
The Application Process: All applications are exclusively accepted via the M-DCPS Parent Portal. You can visit yourchoicemiami.org to access the Magnet application. You will be prompted to sign into the parent portal using your Google or Apple ID, regardless of whether or not your child is enrolled in M-DCPS.
Boost your child’s chances and expand their options by applying for up to five programs with a single application. Selection is typically determined through a random lottery, except for Visual and Performing Arts and International programs, which require auditions and language proficiency testing, respectively.
Some Important Considerations for the Online Magnet Application:
Scheduling Auditions or Proficiency Tests: For programs requiring auditions or proficiency tests, these events must be scheduled directly within the application system before submitting your application.
Audition and Proficiency Tests: All audition and proficiency tests will occur after the Jan. 15 submission deadline and must be completed by Mar. 1.
Editing Applications: New this year, you will have the flexibility to make changes to applications after they have been submitted, until the Jan. 15 deadline. Take advantage of this opportunity to fine-tune your selections.
