Best known as the co-founder of beloved sleepwear brand Eberjey, Ali Mejia is trading pajamas for picture books with the release of her debut children’s title, The Butterfly Studio — a whimsical, empowering story that champions creativity for young girls.
The Butterfly Studio arrives as a timely antidote to the creativity crisis facing today’s youth, especially young girls, many of whom are taught that imagination is “too messy” for success.
Blending dreamlike storytelling with grounded emotional truths, The Butterfly Studio follows Inez, a spirited young girl growing up in a world where grades come first and creativity is “too messy.” That is, until two fashionable butterflies, Liv and Hazel, invite her into their magical studio, where she learns how to block print, dye fabric, design an outfit, and discover that creativity isn’t about perfection; it’s about listening to your heart.
“We’re raising a generation of girls who think they have to choose between being creative and being successful,” Mejia said. “The Butterfly Studio shows that you can be both – and demonstrates how. This book is the story I wish I had growing up.”
Mejia’s journey from a suppressed creative working on Wall Street to a successful entrepreneur mirrors that of her protagonist. Growing up, she buried her love of fabrics and design, chasing achievement instead of alignment, only to rediscover her artistic voice when co-founding Eberjey 25 years ago.
“I spent years trying to fit into boxes that weren’t meant for me,” Mejia explained. “Inez’s story is the permission slip I wish I’d had – to trust your instincts, embrace the mess, and create something uniquely yours.”
Known for pioneering a softer, more authentic vision of femininity through Eberjey, Mejia brings the same ethos to The Butterfly Studio.
