Emmy Egan, a nine-year-old who has been battling leukemia for more than two years, had a dream come true when she got to meet and feed a sloth at Zoo Miami. The animal is special to her since she would often watch videos of sloths to distract her during especially difficult chemotherapy treatments.
Emmy traveled all the way from Colorado to get close to an animal that has always fascinated her and whose videos helped pass the time during especially difficult chemotherapy treatments. The experience provided a much-needed respite for a young girl and family that have been battling cancer for more than two years.
Ron Magill, Miami’s goodwill ambassador, led Emmy’s VIP experience, providing the Egans a private tour that included parts of the zoo that aren’t accessible to the public.
Emmy not only had her dream to meet a sloth come true, she also fed, interacted and learned about giraffes, chimps, elephants, a rhino, a giant Galapagos tortoise, and other animals.
Make-A-Wish Southern Florida has granted more than 15,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children that have critical illnesses. It aims to grant a wish for every medically eligible child and understands wishes aren’t just nice, they’re necessary for kids and families during some of their most difficult times.
Wish kids most often “wish to be” (something), “wish to meet” (someone), “wish to go” (somewhere), “wish to have” (something), or “wish to give” (to a cause) and the nonprofit organization makes this happen for the child and his or her entire family at no cost or obligation.
The Southern Florida chapter’s territory includes 22 counties/four regions in Southeast and Southwest Florida, on the Suncoast, and around Tampa Bay. It also includes the U.S. Virgin Islands.
