Originally from Venezuela, Leopoldo Cordova Romero, a doctor in Miramar with experience in pediatrics, also is a Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Abraham S. Fischler College of Ed-ucation and School of Criminal Justice stu-dent completing an Educational Specialist (EdS) degree in Curriculum, Instruction, Management and Administration (CIMA).
This EdS degree, one of the bilingual programs offered by NSU, gives Dr. Cor-dova Romero the chance to learn English in a collaborative setting.

“Many students are of Latin American or other countries,” Cordova Romero said. “Our English is no good. We improved the English in the university. This, I am very happy, because I never understood English in the past, in my school in Venezuela. And here I had the opportunity.”

Since the early 2000s, NSU’s Miami campus has offered several programs with support in bilingual education, including CIMA, Master of Science in Spanish Lan-guage Education, Master of Science in Ex-ceptional Student Education, and Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership.

Georgina Argüello, EdD, assistant dean, Academic and Faculty Affairs for Bilin-gual Programs, said the target audience for the master’s programs are Hispanic stu-dents who earned bachelor’s degrees in other countries. Students graduating from the programs go on to become teachers in local public schools.

“English is not their first language,” Argüello said. “In these master’s pro-grams, the purpose is for them to start get-ting acquainted to the English culture, the English language.”

Argüello, who explained the programs were started in response to rising immigra-tion from Latin America to Miami, looks forward to seeing the programs grow and continue to help international students.

“We see a lot of potential because a lot of immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries are coming in, especially to South Florida,” she said. “We have a lot of potential to con-tinue growing these programs. The popula-tion in Miami, especially the West Kendall area, Homestead, Doral… these are magnif-icent locations that are growing immensely.”

NSU’s classes are taught in English, with bilingual support in Spanish, and are offered online and in person on Saturdays throughout the fall, winter, and summer.

Join in on Mar. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, for an on-campus info session at the NSU Miami-Kendall Campus, 8585 SW 124 Ave.
