The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department wants to help families reconnect with nature and discover the fun and adventure of camping under the stars, with its new Miami EcoAdventures program, “Family Campouts.”
Family Campouts begin at these designated Miami EcoAdventures Nature Centers, during these dates/times:
Castellow Hammock Park, 22301 SW 162 Ave., Feb. 11-12 and Mar. 11-12, 3 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday, and A.D. “Doug” Barnes Park, 3401 SW 72 Ave., Feb. 25-26 and Mar. 18-19, 3 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday.
No experience necessary, just bring your own tent, sleeping bag and food to cook over a campfire. Expert naturalists will assist you every step of the way, as you take part in an owl-walk along forest trails and learn basic camping techniques/outdoor skills, including everything from “how to pitch a tent and set up a campsite” to “how to toast marshmallows around a campfire and make yummy s’mores.”
The cost to participate in one of the Family Campouts is $15 per person or $40 for a family of four ($10, each additional child). Register by calling 305-666-5885.
