Partnership bringing financial literacy education to Miami-Dade students
The new financial literacy program serves high school students in underrepresented communities across Miami.

Achieve Miami, a nonprofit organization dedicated to equalizing educational opportunities for students throughout Miami-Dade County, is partnering with Morgan Stanley, a global financial services firm, to launch a new financial literacy program for 300 low-income students in high schools across Miami.

The program, which is launching now and will run through April, teaches students in underrepresented communities the fundamentals of personal finance with the goal of advancing Achieve Miami’s mission to level the playing for students in all corners of Miami.

The program encompasses three sessions across 10 Miami-Dade County schools, totaling 30 financial literacy classes. Each class, led by Morgan Stanley employees, is centered around budgeting, savings, and credit, and is designed to teach students basic lessons in financial literacy education as students prepare to graduate high school and enter adulthood.

“This initiative will help bring financial knowledge to students who otherwise wouldn’t have learned this critical information in their current curriculum,” said Leslie Miller Saiontz, founder of Achieve Miami. “These courses are paramount to the Achieve Scholars foundation, preparing students for future success.”

“Our employees are thrilled to collaborate with Achieve Miami to support financial literacy for students,” said Sam Lalanne, managing director, head of strategy for the Morgan Stanley Institute for Inclusion. “Through these classes, we aim to set students up for financial success and provide them knowledge and tools that will serve them well into the future.”

Achieve Miami offers diverse enrichment programs, such as Achieve Scholars, which provides college and career readiness to a diverse group of students in underserved high schools throughout Miami-Dade. The 10 Achieve Scholars schools that are taking part in the Morgan Stanley workshops are Booker T. Washington, Homestead, Miami Carol City, Miami Central, Miami Edison, Miami Jackson, Miami Northwestern, Miami Southridge, Robert Morgan Educational Center, and South Dade.

Morgan Stanley’s Institute for Inclusion brings the firm’s employees, communities, and clients together with the mission of creating a more equitable society. Established in 2020, the Institute for Inclusion invests in underserved communities to help drive workplace diversity and inclusion, as well as support communities in need.

Achieve Miami is dedicated to narrowing racial divides and addressing education challenges in Miami-Dade schools. Its variety of programming includes Achieve Elementary, Achieve Summer, Achieve Saturdays, Achieve High School and Achieve Music. Each of these programs serves to address opportunity gaps in Miami’s educational system and bring together members from various parts of the community.

Achieve Miami’s most recent initiative is the Teacher Accelerator Program (TAP), which aids the nationwide teacher shortage by creating a clear pathway for non-education majors to enter the teaching profession. Achieve Miami has supported thousands of students. bolstered programming for 60-plus schools and engaged thousands of volunteers.
